One of my favorite people to have lunch with was Sr. Gertrude Foley, a former President of the Sisters of Charity.\u00a0 She passed away on June 16, 2023 while I was attending a work conference in Nebraska.<\/p>\n
I considered Sister Gert to be one of my mentors, especially in matters concerning systems thinking.\u00a0 We had spoken about many things over the years, including the importance of defining processes and elements within a larger systemic framework, agreeing upon proper nomenclature of those processes, and developing a common lexicon to improve the ability to effectively communicate about ideas, concepts and outcomes.<\/p>\n
We also had many energizing conversations on leadership, and what constitutes effective leadership today.<\/p>\n
And that seemed to be when our conversations turned to focus on Pope Francis.\u00a0 His leadership was, in a word, authentic.<\/p>\n
What does that mean?<\/p>\n
If we look at it as an emergent principle, there are five elements which could comprise the system that creates authenticity: grounded, inspired, simple, passionate, and humble.<\/p>\n
Pope Francis is grounded in the teachings and beliefs of the Catholic Faith when it comes to relationship with God and following the example of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n
His words and actions are inspired in the true meaning of the word. Inspire means “to breathe in,” and it is our action of breathing in that continues to give us life.<\/p>\n
Inspiration comes from the Spirit, and therefore, inspire means to give life.\u00a0 Certainly, the words and actions of Pope Francis gave life, and inspired millions of people, whether or not they consider themselves to be Catholic.<\/p>\n
His life and needs were simple, opting for frugality rather than the opulence that has traditionally accompanied the papacy.<\/p>\n
Lastly, service is his passion, and while he was celebrated, did not seek the spotlight, and preferred to carry out his ministry in humility.<\/p>\n
He’s also not afraid to say what needs to be said.\u00a0 Recall that during an annual Christmas event in Rome, his comments sharply rebuked an audience of top church officials for their shortcomings.\u00a0 His comments took the cardinals, bishops and priests of the Curia by surprise.\u00a0 Sometimes leaders need to say what needs to be said, even thought the message might be difficult to hear.<\/p>\n
Now compare that to the leadership our nation is experiencing, or that you may be experiencing in your position, at this point in history, and see if it passes the “5 elements” test above for authenticity.<\/p>\n
If it doesn’t, now is the time to pray…if you haven’t been praying throughout these past 40 days.<\/p>\n
